The 6.5L Turbocharged Diesel Engine & Performance: There are a number of modifications that can be made to mechanical and electronic 6.5TD engines to better fuel economy and power. Most of the modifications would include exhaust, air intake, fuel injection and timing changes.

When making any performance modifications to a 6.5TD caution must be used because the 6.5TD has 34 head bolts and they are stretch type. Any excess heat may cause them to stretch and cause head gasket failure. Some modifications like high flow air intake and exhaust systems will help keep cylinder temperatures lower therefore extending head gasket life while improving power and economy.

Adding a high flow exhaust and air intake can generate an additional 35 HP and lower temperatures. We do not suggest any performance chips be used on electronic 6.5L diesel engines due to the increased cylinder temperatures. AFE Air Intakes

We tested a number of popular air intake systems to determine filtration qualities. It’s nice to have a high air flow but if filtration is sacrificed engine damage will result. We were shocked to find most popular systems had extremely poor filtration qualities allowing allot of dirt into the engine. We tested and worked with AFE and the result is their Pro Guard 7 filter media. Pro Guard 7 allows more air in but does not sacrifice filtration, the best of both worlds.

Don't Be Fooled by less expensive AFE air intake systems on the Web because they are trying to sell you Pro Guard 5 not 7. Pro Guard 5 was designed for gasoline engines not diesel engines. If the kit number starts with a 54 number then it is Pro Guard 5, Pro Guard 7 kits start with a 75 number.

Crossover Pipe

All 6.5 turbocharged engines use a crossover pipe. We strongly suggest replacing this pipe at 100,000 miles because it is double walled and the inside wall may come apart and pieces may enter the turbo and cause turbo failure.
